The Buddhist Transformation of Tibetan Kingship

Theme 3The third theme of the project turned its attention to the post-imperial period, and to the manner in which kingship persisted in cultural and religious memory and in institutions, objects, and individuals. In particular, the aim was to explore the Buddhist appropriation of the representation and memory of Tibet’s kings, and the Buddhist absorption of many of the roles and prerogatives of the king. A secondary aim was to contrast this with similar processes within the Bon religion of Tibet.
